Private Pilot
A Private Pilot certificate allows pilots to command their
own single engine plane, day or night, in clear-weather conditions.
FAA Training Minimums: must be at least 17 years
old; log at least 40 flight hours; and pass written and practical
tests. Steps to earning a private pilot license include getting
a student pilot certificate, which allows you to fly with
an instructor, after which students can fly solo and gain
more flight time.
Instrument Rating
Allows you to fly in foul-weather conditions where instrument
navigation is needed. FAA Training Minimums: hold
at least a private pilot license; log 50 hours as a pilot-in-command;
have cross-country experience; have 40 hours instrument instruction;
and pass written and practical tests.
Commercial Pilot
Fly for hire! Gain additonal flight proficiency, earn income,
and qualify for lower insurance premiums. FAA Training
Minimums: be at least 18; hold a class II medical certificate;
log at least 250 flight hours; and pass written and practical
tests.
Flight Intructor -- VFR and Instrument
Allows you to teach private- or commercial-flight students.
FAA Training Minimums: be at least 18 years
old; hold either a commercial or airline transport certificate
with instrument ratings; and pass written and practical tests.
Airline Transport Certificate
A must for career-oriented pilots, this certificate
qualifies you for work as an airline pilot. FAA Training
Minimums: must hold a commercial certificate; have 1,500
flight hours; and pass written and practical tests.
