Private Pilot
A private pilot certificate allows first-time
pilots to fly in clear skies. FAA Training Minimums:
40 hours flight time and pass FAA written and practical
tests.
Commercial Pilot
This certificate allows pilots to fly for hire
and carry paying passengers. FAA Training Minimums:
150 hours flight time and pass FAA written and practical
tests.
Instrument Rating
An instrument rating allows pilots to fly in dense
fog and clouds or other situations that force pilots
to rely on instruments for navigation. FAA Training
Minimums: 40 hours flight time and pass written
and practical tests.
Flight Instructor Certificate
Being certificated as a flight instructor allows
experienced pilots to teach private and commercial
flight skills. FAA Training Minimums: certification
as a commercial pilot for rotorcraft helicopter and approximately
15 hours of dual CFI training.
Flight Instructor -- Instrument
A "Flight Instructor -- Instrument"
rating allows flight instructors to teach advanced
students how to fly in cloudy situations. FAA
Training Minimums: certification as a commercial
pilot for rotorcraft helicopter; certification as
an instructor for helicopter; gain an instrument rating
for helicopter; and earn five hours of dual instrument
instruction.
Basic, Advanced, and Instrument Ground Instructor
A ground instructor rating allows pilots to teach
all forms of flight ground instruction. FAA Training
Minimum: pass a written test.
